HomeSpun: Smithsonian Indian American Heritage Project

Dear Indian American Community Leader,

I am delighted to tell you about a historic initiative from the Smithsonian Institution on Indian immigrants and their descendants, entitled  HomeSpun: The Indian American Heritage Project.  My name is Pawan Dhingra.  I am an associate professor of sociology and comparative American studies at Oberlin College and the curator of this project. 

North South Foundation - Spelling bee

North South Foundation (NSF) is a volunteer driven non-profit organization established in 1989. There are lots of poor children in India who excel academically but need help to attend college. NSF is designed to encourage these poor children in India.  This year we established a NSF chapter in Tulsa to aid in this endeavor.

On April 9th the NSF Tulsa Chapter held the regional the Math and Spelling bee contest for the first time in Tulsa. There were a total of 54 participants for this contest. Significant achievements on this contest with their ranks are as below.

The Institute of Interfaith Dialog (IID) and Raindrop Turkish House organized a lecture Program with Indian community titled “Exploring Faith and Culture: India and Hinduism”

The Institute of Interfaith Dialog and Raindrop Turkish House of Tulsa hosted Leaders of The Indian community with a dinner for a lecture program on February 17, 2011. Participants shared food from both cultures. There was delicious Indian food and Traditional Turkish Food. Before the dinner, The Institute of Interfaith Dialog Tulsa director Kamil Celik welcomed and gave a presentation about the mission and work of I.I.D. followed by a video presentation of Turkey. He mentioned Turkey's close ties with India dating back to early years of Modern Turkey. Dr. Navin Mathur, director of manufacturing at Advance Research Chemicals, Inc. spoke about India and Hinduism showing beautiful pictures and informational slides. Dr. Mathur talked about the rich history andgreat heritage of India and also mentioned the friendliness and hospitality of Indian culture.(February 17,2011,Tulsa,OK) The Program was followed with a lovely dinner. The members of both groups stayed longer to share their feelings and exchanged information to continue their friendship
